In this classic book first published in 1963 and which has reached millions of readers, Maharishi unfolds his vision for "a new humanity developed in all life's values - physical, mental, material, spiritual." Now this book has been re-released with new appendices and an afterword by Dr. Bevan Morris, President of Maharishi University of Management.
Not long after Maharishi began his world tours, his students urged him to commit this great teaching to paper. In 1963 Maharishi offered to the world the Science of Being and Art of Living, which systematically unfolds for our scientific age the wisdom of the Veda and Vedic Literature taught to Maharishi by Guru Dev.
In this volume Maharishi presents the Science of Being as the systematic investigation into the ultimate reality of the universe. Like other sciences it begins its investigation from the gross, obvious level of life, and delves more deeply into the subtle levels of the experience of Nature. The Science of Being, however, eventually transcends these subtle regions, and reaches the transcendental field of eternal Being.
At the time this volume was written, modern science had not yet glimpsed the existence of a single universal field at the basis of all natural phenomena, even though the discovery of this Unified Field of Natural Law had been Einstein’s final scientific quest some decades before. By the 1990s, however, the Unified Field of Natural Law had become the greatest focus of theoretical physics, and modern science may now be said to have glimpsed the field of transcendental pure Being.
But this book is still far ahead of the objective traditions of modern scientific inquiry in one crucial sense to modern science, the theory of the Unified Field of Natural Law is a mathematical abstraction—beautiful and profound, but irrelevant to practical life. To Maharishi and the Vedic Tradition, the experience of Being, Pure Consciousness—the Unified Field of Natural Law—is the most practical and useful experience in daily life that one can have. It is relevant to practical life because it is completely easy for any human being anywhere in the world to have access to pure Being, and utilize the unlimited potential of Being to make daily life joyful and successful. This is achieved effortlessly through the twice-daily practice of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation technique.

I've been meditating for 8 years and am only JUST reading this book now. I can only read small doses, 10-15 pages because the material is very dense and I've been reading it just prior to my morning meditation. It puts me in a good space going in. The book really explains what we're doing in meditation and what the processes are that are taking place and it's very inspiring because your "furthering" you're own agendas; personal, professional and spiritual. This knowledge is not "essential" to getting the benefits, the same way understanding how digestion works is not essential to the absorption of nutrients but, if you have that knowledge in increases your awareness of WHY you meditate so that even if you don't "feel like it", you're inspired to do it anyway. This isn't a problem I have but I've heard some people practiced and then just stopped. That seems very strange to me, I can't imagine ever stopping. The information has also lead me to question alot of things about my meditation, things that I hope to get answered the next time I get "checked". I don't know if the conversation on BEING which is essential for all the remaining chapters will be accessible to non meditaters. I'm not being elitest, I just know that I struggled with it initially and Being as I understand it is only really accessible in the state of transcendence OR if you've been meditating sufficiently that you consciousness has been infused with the state of being (I'm not there) I would question if someone not familiar with TM could grasp being in a meaningful way. I could definitely be wrong.

A must read over and over again.
Great man. Great book.
Great read for anyone who practices TM.
This covers all the answers! Shows why and how one reaches full potential.
There is no beating this translation - you can read this book a hundred times and always find something new that is highly relevant to where you are now!
An exemplary book about 'life.' Maharishi turns complicated things into simple things. This book is good. Knowledge and experience go hand and hand. I recommend learning the TM technique and reading this book. They complement each other.
This book is "the Bible" for anyone practicing Meditation as taught by any branch of the Shankaracharya Holy Tradition. Best to find an older copy, pre-1980's, before the TM organization edited MMY's text, removing the preface written by Charles Lutes, etc... This book does not teach you how to meditate (as some have criticized). It's not meant to. This book serves as the intellectual companion to the practice. It is intended for those already meditating using this technique.
